The Importance of Supporting Black-owned Brands Right Now

As a black-owned brand owner myself, I think it is vital that we support each other. The highly-publicized murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor sparked major outrage within the black community and they served as a catalyst for the support of Black-owned businesses on a global scale. However, it shouldn't stop with a Black Lives Matter slogan on a mug or tee. It shouldn't stop at Blackout Tuesday and other online initiatives to bring attention to the suffering of the black community.

Supporting Black-owned businesses should be a lifestyle. We should make a conscious effort to support black businesses. In this article, I am going to be highlighting the importance of supporting black-owned brands and I am going to list a few brands that you should be supporting right now.

Here are four reasons why you should be supporting black businesses right now.

Builds and Strengthens Communities

When we all make a very conscious effort to support black businesses it strengthens and builds black communities. Take a look at the Jewish community, for example, I lived in North London, the United Kingdom a few years back and parts of North West London, in particular, are predominantly Jewish. They have their own schools, bakeries, supermarkets, security firms, law firms and everything else in between. They support each other and their businesses and communities thrive and grow because of the unconditional support that they offer each other as a community.

Supporting black-owned businesses creates a chain effect whereby, communities are built and reinforced.

Therefore, the next time you decide to buy some makeup, hair care products, dishwashing soap or anything else that you might need or want, consider searching for a black-owned brand to buy from instead.

One item that you need on a regular basis for example is laundry detergent. If you are based in America, do you know of any black-owned laundry detergent brands? Instead of buying your regular detergent, buy from this brand instead:

True Laundry Detergent

We first came across True Laundry Detergent when we were browsing through the WeBuyBlack Instagram feed. This product has rave reviews and is currently selling out quickly in the black community however, we can support them more.

Creates Job Opportunities

When companies grow and become more financially buoyant, they have the ability to employ staff, thus reducing unemployment in the black community. Let's build each other up, let's work together to create jobs and to build large-scale black-owned businesses.

Build Large-Scale Companies

The truth is the black community is lagging behind when it comes to ownership of large-scale companies that employ staff. Business with paid employees have a larger economic impact than those without employees. The annual sales of a business without employees is significantly lower than those with employees. More than 67 percent of firms without employees had annual sales in the United States in 2018 of less than $25,000. Businesses with employees had annual sales of more than $200,000. Therefore, building big businesses is crucial for the development of the black economy.

Build Generational Wealth

When I think about my upbringing, I am grateful for having a roof over our heads and food to eat however, my parents did nothing to build generational wealth sadly. They worked their nine to five jobs for the government in the UK and they failed to make significant moves to build generational wealth. There are many ways to do this however, one of the ways is to build sustainable, profitable businesses that can be passed down from generation to generation.

When we place a huge emphasis on supporting black-owned brands, we facilitate the process of building generational wealth.
